Morning sun touches Dead Creek
and waves of mist begin to rise.
Flocks of grackles dance
above the cattails,
while in the distance
a blue heron cries.

But high overhead in a cloudy sky
a skein of snow geese surrenders
to the distant calls
of a persistent sender.
